This is our sixth Author Spotlight, and for me, it’s a personal one. Battle Cry of Freedom was the first Civil War book I ever read. I bought it in 1988 as a young Marine officer, just after it came out. As I worked on this spotlight, I stepped into the kitchen for a coffee refill—and realized the same copy was sitting on a shelf in my family room. It’s followed me through military moves and well beyond my time in uniform.
Few authors have shaped our understanding of the Civil War more than McPherson. Whether writing about Abraham Lincoln, the experience of common soldiers, or the war’s naval campaigns, he brings unmatched clarity, empathy, and insight to the page.
