MRR Note: A year has passed since we first published our review of Jack Carr’s Targeted: Beirut, and we republish it today on the 42nd remembrance of the bombing of the Marine Barracks in Lebanon, October 23, 1983. Thanks to you, MRR has grown since our start in August 2024, and we feel several of our earlier posts deserve another look to our wider audience. Targeted: Beirut is one of these. As the bombing sinks into history, the meaning of the story deepens with age. It remains worth remembering, not only for the courage and sacrifice of those deployed to Beirut, but also for what it revealed about U.S. foreign policy debate at the time.
