For decades, I received my copy of The Marine Corps Gazette, scanned the table of contents for interesting articles, and then turned to the back to check out the featured book reviews for that month. While imperfect, this process presents you with ideas on what to read next. Suppose you take that one step further and look at the larger family of Military Journals and periodicals produced by the services, their war colleges, and publishers. In that case, you get a robust list of books that might interest you.
We have purposely omitted book descriptions from this list and will use the author’s choice of title as the book's description. Some of these publications that host book reviews require a subscription. As such, we provide a link to the publication website and the organization's membership page for subscription information. Few of us will want the expense of subscribing to all of these publications; however, we encourage you to subscribe to the journal that best fits your interests and profession and get into the habit of reading their articles and book reviews.
Our review of journals released in August or Fall for the quarterlies found a wide selection of books, each offering insights into modern military strategy, global politics, and the evolution of warfare. They explore U.S. security assistance in Latin America, the military’s readiness for AI-driven conflicts, and the complex operating environment of the Taiwan Strait and the Cold War’s naval competition. We think there is something here for everyone and hope this post will ignite your curiosity.
So here we go. We hope you find something you didn’t know existed and are excited to read.
