Honoring the Silent Service: National Submarine Day and the Legacy Beneath the Waves
Every year on April 11th, the U.S. honors one of its most elite and enigmatic military communities: the Submarine Force, often referred to as the “Silent Service.” National Submarine Day commemorates the date in 1900 when the Navy officially accepted its first modern submarine, the USS Holland (SS-1), into service. Though only 53 feet long and manned by a crew of six, the Holland was a revolutionary leap forward, equipped with a gasoline engine for surface propulsion, electric motors for submerged travel, and armed with torpedoes. It proved that undersea warfare was not only possible but operationally viable.
