Earlier this week, we highlighted books that bring us to today, December 7th—a date etched in history 83 years ago. As time passes, fewer and fewer men and women remain who can recall that day firsthand. I’m fortunate that my mother, now 90, is still with us. While she was a bit too young to remember the attack itself, she vividly recalls victory gardens and ration cards for essentials like sugar. Unlike many more recent conflicts, World War II touched the lives of nearly everyone in the United States—and across the world. On this solemn anniversary, as we honor the men and women lost during the attack on Pearl Harbor, it’s also important to reflect on the remarkable achievements of our naval leaders in its aftermath.
