There’s no shortage of conversation about artificial intelligence these days.
Fueled by flashy, mysterious, and often foreboding AI headlines—like the recent announcement from a Chinese company about DeepSeek, a generative AI model touted as a cheaper, faster competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT—AI has entered virtually everyone’s lexicon. Whether you fully understand AI or not, one thing is certain: generative artificial intelligence is no longer a distant concept confined to the realm of technical experts and venture capitalists. What is clear is that generative AI, and other advanced technologies are rapidly reshaping society and redefining how we think about national security. Too often, social media discussions on AI are either shallow, laced with political rants, or so dense with technical jargon that they fail to impart useful knowledge and context. For those looking to cut through the noise and gain a clearer understanding of AI’s broader implications, I recommend picking up a book. There are plenty of them out there. For me, Four Battlegrounds by Paul Scharre was an excellent place to start.
